2025: Happy New Year from Liverpool!

Well, what a whirlwind of a year that was...! And here we are, a new year again, and for us at MTM, a new studio to boot! We moved from Southampton to Liverpool in September, and the welcome here has been awesome! It's been amazing getting to know some of the talented musicians and creative folks in this city. I can't believe we've only been here 3 months, but we've got a lot done in that time.

With a little help from our friends (sorry, I couldn't resist a Beatles reference) we managed to get the studio painted, ship-shape and Bristol fashion (even got some signage on the front too!), with some matching furniture too. I think our little Yuki is a fan...

Our neighbours are super lovely, and exploring the city and its surroundings has kept us busy when we're not cracking on with work. There's a lot more greenery here than I could have expected, so no excuse to not get my fitness back in check now!

In just over a week's time, I'll be starting at Ullet Road Church as their new organist.

Ullet Road Church
Ullet Road Church: what a stunning Grade I listed building!

I'm dead excited about this, and I've been busy today thinking about what lovely music I can bring along.

I've also got some recording projects coming up this year; to record the beautiful sound of the Grade I Hill & Son organ there for the Liverpool College Organ Department. I'm going to record some of the Suite Gothique, being written when the organ was improved, and then take it for a spin through some English classics...

Organ of St. John the Baptist, Tuebrook
Built in 1867 and hardly changed since!

On the piano front, I'm going to be looking into venues to start doing concerts again. I have a provisional invite to the Tung Auditorium so I'm having a think about what repertoire I might take there. I'm thinking some Mendelssohn lieder, Kapustin, and probably some Lili Boulanger...

I'm thinking about some new repertoire to learn, too. I was given a book of Percy Grainger, so I might explore some of that. and one of my students introduced me to this amazing Rhumba Toccata by Paul Harvey. Super short, super funky!

Let me know what you're learning, or if you have any suggestions for some fun pieces to learn to kick off 2025. Oh, and happy new year again!

Myles
